A secret garden (Haveselskabet)

I almost didn’t write this post as I wanted to keep the illusion of this place as my secret garden. As a child I harboured a dream of discovering a secret garden just like the book but my garden would have the added extra of a unicorn. There are no unicorns (at least that I have seen) in this beautiful little world tucked alongside Frederiksberg Haven but I understand there are peacocks, which to me are almost as magical.
I had spotted the entrance many times but had always assumed it led to a restaurant and little else (there is a very expensive and by all accounts amazing restaurant there) but there is so much more.
Beautiful lawns, little arbours, follies, rare plants and flowers, a perfect shady lily pond. My mind raced from one fairy tale to the next as I wandered around this peaceful little oasis. It was surprisingly quiet with a few sunbathers, people reading in the shade and rather incongruously a small group of firemen enjoying a picnic by the pond, despite the heatwave.
This has now become my new special place…maybe it will be yours too?
